all the men before me (2018) Artspeak Gallery, Windsor, ON
Before I understood what queerness was, I sought a familiarity that I could not name and whose characteristics I could not identify. I would naively project this familiarity onto the objects and people around me hoping that they would respond. If they did, I am not certain I perceived it. I continue to project a familiarity, hoping still that somebody will respond.
____
all the men before me is a collection of work based on the pursuit of familiarity. Emerging from queer histories, personal experiences, and self-reflection, the work explores queerness, relationships, and selfhood. Like identity, it is a masked presence which becomes more apparent and more difficult to grasp.
